Announcement:

  • The game was announced at Nintendo's E3 Press Conference on July 15th, 2008 as a Nintendo DS game.
  • It was revealed that the game would take place in 'modern day Liberty City.' It was assumed to be GTA IV's detailed Liberty City.
  • It was also revealed that the game would feature "a custom engine and new characters."
  • It was announced for a 'Winter 2008' release (later to be delayed).

Development:

  • Developed by Rockstar Leeds, in conjunction with series creator Rockstar North.
  • Published by Rockstar Games
  • Rating: ESRB: M for Mature; BBFC: 18+
  • US Release: March 17th, 2009
  • UK Release: March 20th, 2009

Graphics:

  • The graphics are much different than all previous GTA games. The angle of the camera gives the environment a 3D effect, but from a top-down perspective.
  • All elements of the environment are cel-shaded so that everything has a black border to help identify individual objects.

Setting:

  • The game's LIberty City is replicated from Grand Theft Auto IV's Liberty City except for a few changes.
  • Alderney is not included.
  • The other boroughs (Dukes, Broker, Algonquin, and Bohan) are slightly scaled down.
  • Weather and day to night effects are fully integrated.
